The Roads to Abitibi-Témiscamingue

People from Southern and Western Quebec, did you know that you could take two different roads to get to Abitibi-Témiscamingue? The same diversity applies to people coming from Ontario! Here’s all the details about how to get to our area, no matter where you are from! As the saying goes: All roads lead to Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

Road 117, near the Rivière des Outaouais (Des Outaouais River)

Let’s say that you are from Montreal and you want to come to Abitibi-Témiscamingue this weekend to attend one of our festivals, you can obviously take the 15 North and the mythical 117 passing through the Réserve Faunique La Vérendrye (La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve). You would arrive in Val-d’Or and Rouyn-Noranda would be an hour and a quarter drive beyond that point. In all, this route represents about 635 km.

You can also, and it is the lesser known way here, depart from Ontario. Via Ottawa, take Road 417, or Road 17 (apparently the number to remember to come over here).
Then, one has to follow the Rivière des Outaouais, and arrive in the Témiscamingue sector. From there, have a look at the Parc National d’Opémican (Opémican’s National Park), go through Ville-Marie, the prettiest town of Quebec, and pursue your journey towards Rouyn-Noranda, adding up to about 790 km total.
While you are there, why not loop? You’ll see how beautiful our corner of the country is! Indeed, the roads to Abitibi-Témiscamingue can offer the opportunity to visit wonderful cities and villages throughout the trip. Welcome to our home.

The loop in question:

Departure from Ontario

Our friends from the neighbouring province, Ontario, also have different choices in regards to what road to take to come to us. If you arrive from the South of Ontario, let’s say from Toronto, you have to take the 11, the 63, then the 101, and there you go!
It looks like a 624 km long straight line towards the North between Toronto and Rouyn-Noranda. Naturally, if your destination is the Témiscamingue area, the distance shortens to 406 km.

If you arrive from the North-Eastern part of Ontario, let’s say Sudbury, the itinerary is simple. Take road 17 first, then in Verner (at the gas station and “Chez Julie” restaurant), turn left onto road 575.

Once in New Liskeard, take road 101 to get to the Témiscamingue sector. This route totals 350 km.

No matter the path you choose, or the one you must take, the importance is to enjoy your time on the road. Travelling to Abitibi-Témiscamingue is synonymous to road-trip. Choose your best copilot and your favorite musical playlist! If you do not own a vehicle, there are alternatives. Bon voyage!
